We can all agree there is an art to everything. Whether it be in running, public speaking, or even parallel parking your vehicle. In leadership there appear to be many different approaches. A simple Google search of leadership methods produces a plethora of examples full of “how to’s” and do’s and don’t’s”. The question I always ponder is if in fact there is a verifiable universal art to being a leader. Sure many qualities will be present like humility, ownership, confidence, tenacity and even a little pride might come into account. Can leadership be learned or would it be more of a birthright bestowed upon us at birth? I actually think that it might be a little bit of both.
Grooming takes on a tremendous role when developing a leader. Surroundings have a lot to do with leadership skills and style. Another question is at what point will the pupil become the master. Also, when is that monumental turning point. Will it be some obscure occasion when the student discovers something within themselves? Or will it be an event that will forever be etched in the mind of that future leader? Perhaps, both.
